Privacy at Gomu

Gomu is a Japanese-learning app built around short video clips, saved vocabulary, and spaced-repetition review. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, and how to make us delete it.

01What we collect

When you create an account, we collect your email address. Your password is handled by our authentication provider (Supabase) and is never stored by us in plain text.

As you use Gomu, we store the data needed to make the app work:

  • Onboarding answers — your JLPT level, why you're learning, the challenges you picked, and your daily time goal.
  • Saved vocabulary — words you tap and save from clips, and your review history for each one.
  • Watch history — which clips you've watched, so we don't repeat them and can compute your stats.
  • Daily activity — the dates you used the app, used to calculate your streak.
  • Achievements — badges you've unlocked.
  • Settings — in-app preferences such as playback and notification settings.
  • Feedback — any message you submit through the feedback form in your profile.

We do not collect your precise location, contacts, photos, or microphone/camera data — Gomu doesn't request access to any of these.

02How we use it

We use your data only to run and improve Gomu: personalizing your feed by JLPT level, scheduling your vocabulary reviews, tracking streaks and achievements, keeping your account signed in and synced, and reading feedback you send us.

No ad targeting No data sold No analytics SDKs No third-party trackers

Gomu has no advertising or analytics/tracking SDKs integrated — there's simply no ad or analytics network we'd be feeding your data to.

03Who we share it with

We don't sell or rent your data. It's only shared with the infrastructure providers that make the app work, each acting on our instructions:

  • Supabase — hosts our database and handles account authentication.

We may also disclose data if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Gomu or our users.

04YouTube playback

Clips in Gomu stream directly from YouTube using YouTube's own embedded player. When you play a clip, YouTube (Google) may collect data about that playback — such as your IP address and device information — under its own privacy practices, separate from ours.

See Google's Privacy Policy for how YouTube handles this. Every YouTube-sourced clip in Gomu credits its channel and links back to the original video.

05Retention & deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from Profile → Danger Zone → Delete account — this removes your saved words, progress, streaks, achievements, feedback, and your login itself. It can't be undone.

No support ticket needed. Account deletion is a single in-app action, and it removes the underlying login, not just your app data.

06Security

All traffic between the app and our backend is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS). Access to your data is restricted by row-level security policies scoped to your account, so one user's data isn't reachable by another.

07Your rights

You can, at any time:

  • Access your data — most of it is visible directly in the app (Profile, Vocab, review history).
  • Correct your onboarding answers and settings from within the app.
  • Delete your account and all associated data in-app, or by emailing us.

If you're in a region with additional statutory rights (such as the EU/UK or California), those rights apply to you as provided by law, and you can reach us at the email below to exercise them.

08Children

Gomu is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.

09Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
